Marine Watches, Warnings, and Advisories for Anglers

How to put National Weather Service marine headlines ahead of a fishing score or a preferred tide window.

A marine headline is issued for a forecast zone and hazard. Read the official product, its valid time, and its geographic coverage before deciding whether to leave shore.

Open The Official Headline

A badge or summary can tell you that a product exists, but the National Weather Service text contains the hazard, affected waters, timing, and recommended action. Open it and confirm that your route lies inside the named zone.

Do not assume all Small Craft Advisories use one national wind or wave threshold. Criteria reflect regional conditions and local Weather Forecast Office practices.

Match The Valid Time To The Whole Trip

A headline beginning after launch can still affect the return. Compare its start and end with the drive, launch, fishing period, and recovery of the boat or kayak. Allow for a slower return if weather or visibility deteriorates.

Conditions can vary within a marine zone, and an exposed inlet may not look like a sheltered harbor. A calm view from shore is not evidence that the warning is unnecessary offshore.

Do Not Let A Score Overrule It

A fishing or tide score summarizes selected inputs. It cannot account for every local hazard, crew limitation, equipment failure, or official safety instruction. TideAhead treats active safety messages as decision context, not as another point in a recreational ranking.

If the official forecast and a recreational plan disagree, change the plan. Choose shore-based access outside the hazard area, select another day, or remain ashore rather than looking for a more favorable app reading.

Keep Receiving Updates

The National Weather Service recommends monitoring marine information before and during boating. Carry a communications method appropriate to the route, and know how to use it before an emergency.

Forecasts and warnings can change as observations arrive. Refresh the official product shortly before leaving and again when conditions or timing differ from the original plan.
